Reformists send letter to Supreme Leader regarding ex-president’s participation in elections
ILNA: The reformists have sent a joint letter to the Iran Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei regarding the participation of Mohammad Khatami at the upcoming presidential elections in Iran, member of Iranian Islamic Coalition party (Islamic Motalefeh party), Asadullah Badamchyan said.

Asadullah Badamchyan said that in their letter, the reformists asked the Supreme Leader to supervise the allowance of Khatami to participate in the upcoming elections.

Seyyed Mohammad Khatami is a reformist politician. He served as the fifth President of Iran from 2 August 1997 to 3 August 2005.

Next presidential elections in Iran are slated to be held on June 14, 2013.

The voters will select the successor of current president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who is not able to participate in the elections for the third straight time due to country’s constitutional laws.

"The next presidential elections, the reformists are said to have several approaches. Some say they will not participate in elections. Others have suggested boycotting the elections. And some are in the procss of making Mr. Mohammad Khatami involved in the elections," Asadullah Badamchyan said.

Spokesman for Coordination Front’s reform council, Najafqulu Habibi said that this assembly would hold meetings on 16-17 January in Tehran.

In November, Iran’s political reformist groups met country’s former president Mohammad Khatami, and expressed their will to have Khatami as a candidate at the upcoming elections.

Khatami himself said that he still waits for the positive changes in the country, and will reveal his decision when the time is right.
