Russia operation in eastern Ukraine aims to build negotating leverage: Expert

An expert on regional issues believes that the United States seeks to activate its “containment” strategy in the Ukraine war.
Mehdi Zakerian said in remarks to ILNA that “The Kremlin is convinced that complete control of Ukraine is not possible, and that is why the second phase of its military offensive is now resumed in eastern Ukraine.”
He said that despite what Ukrainian officials have said, the new Russian move in eastern Ukraine appears to be a kind of "building leverage to get concessions in the negotiations."
"In other words, we are witnessing a new Cold War," he said.
He added that Russia wants to consolidate its power abroad, while the United States seeks to activate its “containment” strategy.
