Zarif, Guterres confer on Yemen and Afghanistan developments
The Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Secretary-General of the United Nations spoke by telephone for the second time on Sunday about the latest developments in Yemen and Afghanistan.
In this phone conversation, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres presented a report on the UN's efforts to maintain the ceasefire in Yemen.
The Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Mohammad Javad Zarif, also supported the UN Secretary-General's efforts to establish a ceasefire in Yemen, saying that there is no military solution to the crisis stating that establishment of a lasting ceasefire is a prelude to the start of a political process to resolve the Yemeni crisis.
Iran's top diplomat also presented a report on Iran's diplomatic efforts to resolve the political crisis in Afghanistan and advancing the peace process in the country. He provided details of his contacts with Afghanistan's authorities, including "Mohammad Ashraf Ghani", "Abdullah Abdullah" and "Hanif Atmar".
Earlier, the Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Secretary-General of the United Nations discussed the US unilateral sanctions against Iran.
In this conversation, the UN Secretary-General expressed his sympathy and solidarity with the Iranian people and stressed the need to lift US sanctions against Iran amid the outbreak of the coronavirus.
