“It is significant that the Europeans did not endorse the American sanctions or move to restoration of those by the UN,” a Political science professor at Department of Political Science and International Studies told ILNA.

William Lucas who is Professor of International Politics said in an exclusive interview that Europeans is better to following the formal procedure of the dispute mechanism.

The UK, France, and Germany have officially launched the dispute mechanism in the Iran nuclear agreement 2015, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) but highlighted that they won't impose US President Donald Trump's 'maximum pressure' sanctions on Tehran.

"The activation of the dispute mechanism by the UK, France, and Germany provides another opportunity for the remaining 5+1 Powers to reach an accord with Iran --- one would save the nuclear deal and limit the effect of US sanctions,” he added.

William Lucas confirmed that Iran has another chance to pursue talks with the 5 Powers. This would not only offer a lifeline for a troubled economy but also defuse the conflict, following the American assassination of Maj. Gen. Qassem Soleimani that also led to the Iranian military's downing of Ukraine International Airlines Flight 752.

The political analyst said “If the Islamic Republic rejects this chance, it may be risking economic isolation, not only from Europe but also from Beijing, Moscow, and other powers."

Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif in a follow-up tweet called on the three European powers -France, Germany, and the UK- to stop bowing to the US' diktat and rather 'muster the courage' to fulfill their obligations under the 2015 nuclear deal between Tehran and world powers, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

The spokesman for Iran's Foreign Ministry, Seyyed Abbas Mousavi has said that the European Troika statement on activation of the process for resolving disputes in the 2015 nuclear agreement shows the weakness of the European side.
