Tehran visit aims to highlight Iran's staying in nuclear deal
German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said his upcoming visit to Tehran is to focus on Berlin and the EU commitments to Iran nuclear deal known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
Speaking in a meeting with Iraqi Prime Minister Adil Abdul-Mahdi in Baghdad, he said that Germany and the European Union are complying with their commitments to the JCPOA.
He added that the EU has set up a mechanism to downgrade sanctions and to maintain financial transactions with Iran.
Maas added that his Tehran visit aims to highlight Iran's staying in the JCPOA.
During the meeting Maas reiterated Germany's support of Iraq's role in the region especially in the current crisis between Iran and the US.
The German Foreign Ministry earlier announced that Foreign Minister Heiko Maas and Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif are slated to hold a meeting in Tehran on Monday.
