Iran sees itself responsible for providing the security in the region and has been able to do so, the country's defense minister said Monday.

Speaking at the 2nd congress of marine propulsion, Brigadier General Amir Hatami said, 'Iran is a country with maritime borders, and the Persian Gulf, Gulf of Oman and Caspian Sea provide it with special opportunities and position.'

'If the opportunities are not used, they will be turned into threats,' he said.

'Security of many people lies in the sea on the shore of which we are sitting,' the minister said, referring to the large amount of the crude that is shipped through the Strait of Hormuz.

The strong presence of Iran's Army naval forces in the international waters has brought about security as they, along with the forces of Iran's Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC), have been able to provide the security of one of the most strategic waterways of the world, he said.
