Iran summons Iraqi envoy in Tehran
The Iraqi ambassador to Iran has been summoned by Iran Foreign Ministry and a formal protest was lodged to him on the incident of setting fire on Iran's Consulate General in Basra on Friday.
In the meeting, the managing director for the Persian Gulf affairs in Iran's Foreign Ministry expressed regret over Basra Police measures, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Qasemi said.
During the attack conducted by suspicious elements against the Iranian Consulate General, Iraqi government did not fulfill its duties, he added.
The Iraqi envoy was requested to convey Iran’s protests to the Iraqi government and investigate the case and arrest those involved in this accident.
Qasemi had earlier denounced the brutal attack on Iran’s Mission in Basra and called for punishment of the perpetrators of the incident.
Recalling the great responsibility of the Iraq government for protecting diplomatic sites, he warned about hidden elements seeking to mar the two nations’ relations.
The Iraqi government will be responsible for any negligence in this respect, and it is expected to pinpoint the agents and punish them severely, said the spokesman.
