IAEA chief: Iran implementing its nuclear commitments
The head of the United Nations nuclear watchdog reaffirmed that Iran has been committed to the nuclear deal it signed with the major world powers.
Giving a background on Iran's nuclear deal with the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany in 2015, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Director General Yukiya Amano said, 'We were asked by the UN Security Council to verify and monitor that Iran is implementing its nuclear-related commitments under the agreement.'
Addressing the 20th Edoardo Amaldi Conference in Rome on Monday, Amano added that 'as a result, I can state that the nuclear-related commitments undertaken by Iran under the JCPOA are being implemented.'
The process of negotiation, singing and implementing the nuclear deal has valuable lessons for the world, according to Amano.
'The first is that even complex and challenging issues can be tackled effectively if all parties are committed to dialogue – not dialogue for its own sake, but dialogue aimed at achieving results,' he said.
'My second observation is that the IAEA was able to make a vital contribution, and maintain the confidence of all sides, by sticking to its technical mandate and not straying into politics.'
