US default on JCPOA won’t go unanswered
A senior official said Iran will respond to any US failure in meeting its commitments under the 2015 nuclear agreement, to which Washington is also a signatory.
Ali Akbar Velayati, the senior adviser to the Leader of Islamic Revolution on international affairs, made the statement in a talk with reporters on Saturday.
“Undoubtedly, the US reneging on its JCPOA commitments won’t go unanswered,” he said, referring to the nuclear deal, officially called the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action.
Velayati said Iran’s supervisory committee on the implementation of the nuclear accord would discuss the US non-compliance and make a collective decision after hearing the results of the eighth meeting of the JCPOA Joint Commission in Vienna this week.
Under the deal, Iran curbed its nuclear activities in exchange for the removal of all nuclear-related bans imposed on Iran.
The administration of US President Donald Trump, which took over in January 2017—one year after the JCPOA came into force, has, however, slapped sanctions on Iran over its missile program in violation of the nuclear deal.
