No meeting is planned between Zarif and Tillerson in New York
Iran’s top diplomat Mohammad Javad Zarif is to visit the UN headquarters in New York next week to attend the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development and meet counterparts.
The UN forum is taking place from July 11 to 19, with the ministerial meeting scheduled for July 17-19. It aims to review progress on the implementation of Sustainable Development Goals at the global level and this year’s meeting is held on the theme of “eradicating poverty and promoting prosperity in a changing world”.
Zarif will be accompanied in the trip by two of his deputies, Abbas Araqchi and Majid Takht-Ravanchi.
Qasemi said no meeting is planned between Zarif and US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, unlike the last couple of years when Zarif was in regular contact with the former top US diplomat, John Kerry, on the 2015 nuclear deal.
Zarif is also scheduled to attend a meeting of the US Council on Foreign Relations next Monday to discuss current developments in the Middle East with the think tank’s president, Richard Haass.
