Iranian delegation attended in Astana talks
An Iranian delegation headed by Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab-African Affairs Hossein Jaberi-Ansari started talks with various parties in the capital city of Kazakhstan, Astana, where Syrian government and opposition groups are trying to find a solution to Syria war.
Jaberi Ansari discussed the latest developments on Syrian talks with the Russian president’s special envoy in Syrian affairs and head of Russian delegation, Alexander Lavrentiev.
Iranian and Turkish delegations headed by Ansari and Sedat Onal respectively also held specialized discussions on the Syrian crisis as well as regional developments.
Ansari wrote in his telegram page on Tuesday that trilateral talks between Iran, Russia and Turkey, countries which have brokered Astana talks and ceasefire in Syria, was held today.
During the meeting, Ansari, Lavrentiev and Onal reviewed the latest situation and conditions of previous agreements in Astana talks and the schedule for Wednesday's main session.
Syrian Permanent Ambassador in UN Bashar Jafari, who heads Syrian delegation in Astana International Talks, conferred with Anasri tonight.
During the session, both officials discussed the latest developments of talks and implementation of the earlier agreements.
In a relevant meeting with the Head of UN Expert Delegation Milos Strugar, the Iranian official pointed to Iran’s support to UN mission to help settlement of Syrian crisis, underlining the need for simultaneous attention to the human, political and security aspects of the Syrian crisis.
Strugar, for his part, appreciated Iran’s role in Astana talks and Tehran's contribution to Syrian crisis settlement; he underlined UN's readiness for helping successful holding of the talks.
The first round of multilateral Astana talks was held on January 23-24 on the initiative of Iran, Russia and Turkey, attended by the Syrian government’s representatives as well as dissident groups.
The second round of the Astana talks took place on February 15-16, with the participants agreeing to set up a ceasefire monitoring group, encompassing Iran, Russia and Turkey, that would report to the United Nations.
The third meeting involving the Iranian, Russian and Turkish and the UN delegations was held on February 16. The US and Jordan participated in it as observers.
