Chairman of the Expediency Council Ayatollah Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani on Sunday warned against fueling Shia-Sunni conflict in Iraq, saying that it stirs up religious sentiments being misused by the enemies of Islam.

He made the remarks in a meeting with visiting Iraqi Parliament Speaker Salim al-Jabouri.

Rafsanjani said that internal discords after destruction of the terrorists will prepare the ground for raising a dictator like Saddam Hussein in Iraq.

'The experiences of history say that religious conflict will prolong wherever they occur and we should not allow the Muslims to fight with each other rather than unity and cooperation,' Rafsanjani said.

He expressed surprise with the clear and secret relations between certain Muslim governments and the Zionist regime, asking how such relations are possible while they know that the Zionists have pulled out the Palestinian Muslims from their own homes and lands.

Rafsanjani drew attention of the international community to the threat posed by terrorism to the entire world, saying that Iran is ready to cooperate with the Iraqi nation and government to uproot terrorism for the sake of Islamic and humanitarian values.

In the meantime, the Iraqi speaker said that in order to be able to thwart terrorism, the Islamic countries of the region need to take collective action.

Briefing Ayatollah Rafsanjani on the latest developments on the ground in Iraq, he said that Iraq belongs to all Shia Muslims, Sunni Muslims, Izadis, the Turkmen and other religious and ethnic minorities who want to co-exist in peace.
