New Iranian government is interested in pursuing bilateral relations with Finland

Iran’s foreign minister in a meeting with his Finnish counterpart while announcing Iran’s readiness for expansion of economic cooperation with Finland, stressed the need to support the two countries’ private sectors.

Hossein Amirabdollahian in his last bilateral meeting on Tuesday with his counterparts in the sidelines of the 76th UN General Assembly in New York met and conferred with Finland’s Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto, and exchanged viewpoints with him on the latest status in Afghanistan, the region, and bilateral issues.

Amirabdollahian said in the meeting that the new Iranian government is interested in pursuing bilateral relations with Finland more enthusiastically, and in order to do that the two countries’ political committee can convene as soon as possible to give new energy to bilateral ties, and the government supports this broadening of relations.

The Iranian top diplomat in this meeting, meanwhile, announced Iran’s readiness for expansion of economic, commercial, industrial, and agricultural cooperation between the two countries, as well as establishment of direct flights between Tehran and Helsinki.

He also said that the private sector companies of the two countries should receive the necessary support in their activities.

The foreign minister of Finland, for his part, in the meeting reviewed the bilateral ties, including in the political, economic and environmental fields, announcing readiness of Helsinki for the expansion of bilateral ties.

In order to reach that end, he said that the establishment of a join chamber of commerce was a step aimed at broadening the bilateral economic ties, expressing satisfaction over the move.

Pekka Haavisto, meanwhile, announced his country’s readiness for any kind of contribution to the revival of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

He also referred to the background of regional negotiations in the framework of Helsinki, inviting his Iranian counterpart to attend the upcoming Helsinki Conference.
