Amirabdollahian: International community must help stabilize Afghanistan
The Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic of Iran met with Filippo Grandi, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees in New York, and called on the international community to support the establishment of political stability in Afghanistan in order to prevent further displacement of Afghan people.
Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian, said: "It is necessary for international organizations to act more actively in their duties towards the humanitarian situation in Afghanistan in order to prevent the displacement of more people in this country."
Amirabdollahian referred to the fourteen years that the Islamic Republic of Iran has hosted a large number of Afghan refugees and displaced people despite the oppressive US and Western sanctions against Iran,
Iran's top diplomat said: "Iran has tried to be a good host all these years, despite sanctions and economic pressure and the recent outbreak of the Coronavirus."
The Iranian Foreign Minister stressed the need for global support of Iran in this regard while criticizing the US sanctions, unilateral coercive actions against the Iranian people and at the same time the silence of the international community in the face of these illegitimate actions.
The UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) also praised the Islamic Republic of Iran's generous hosting of Afghan refugees and described the latest situation and human rights challenges in Afghanistan.
Grandi acknowledges the inadequacy of global aid in the face of the large and long presence of refugees and displaced persons in Iran and expressed hope that he would be able to make the beneficiary countries aware of their responsibility for this situation.
The Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic of Iran arrived in New York at noon on Monday (local time) to attend the 76th session of the UN General Assembly.
