Iran, Afghanistan to link rail networks this year

Speaking to ILNA news agency, the Iranian official said “By the end of next year, seven rail projects will be put into operation in our country.”

“Construction of the Iranian section of the Khaf-Herat railway is our next goal and with this railway, for the first time, Iran will be connected to Afghanistan,” he added.

He went on to say that Khaf-Herat railway project, as long as 136 km, which connects the rail network of the country of Afghanistan, will come on stream by the end of the Iranian year.

Khaf-Herat is part of Iran-Afghanistan rail corridor. The project started in the fiscal year of 2007-2008, connects Iran’s eastern city of Khaf to Afghanistan’s western city of Ghoryan.

Although the Afghan side of the project has not yet been implemented, Sputnik announced that Afghanistan has been in talks with Italian companies to build the fourth section of the railway, and Afghans appear to be more determined to commence their part of the project this year.
