Commercial ships do not enter Iranian ports with escort; Official
“Commercial ships need no special escort in Iranian territorial waters,” said Allah Morad Afifipur, Managing Director of Hormozgan Province’s Ports and Maritime Organisation (PMO).
Talking to ILNA news agency on Friday, the Iranian official confirmed that commercial ships carrying cargo to Iranian ports enjoy safety and they do not enter Iranian ports with escort.
He said that recent tensions have not had any effect on the number of incoming ships to ports in Hormozgan province and we are using their maximum capacity right now.
“At this time, the largest container ship entered the Shahid Rajai Port, breaking the record for unloading,” he added.
Shahid Rajai Port is Iran’s important and strategic port located at 23 kilometers west of Bandar Abbas, the provincial capital of Hormozgan, north of Qeshm Island and the vital Strait of Hormuz.
Shahid Rajai Port is also one of Iran’s Special Economic Zone (SEZ) and one of the most crucial international transit corridors being situated at the heart of the International North-South Transit Corridor (INSTC).
This corridor links the Indian Ocean to the Persian Gulf, the Caspian Sea and then Russia and north Europe.
According to Allah Morad Afifipur some 1,611,000 tons of non-oil goods were shipped through the port in the first six months of the year.
