Top environmental official reacts to released video of fire in Karaj apple garden +video

Following protest about the fire in Karaj apple garden, environmental officials reacted to it.

Following the release of footage from Mehrshar’s apple garden displaying smoke coming out of the garden, "Hossein Mohammadi", Head of Alborz province division of Iranian Department of Environment reacting to the incident told that every action regarding the garden is under the revival plan.

The 340 Hectare of apple garden in Mehrshar, Karaj with its 50 years history is among the most controversial gardens of the country in recent years.

About two years ago a contractor cut down about 2 thousands trees in this garden which followed by wide protests from public, environmental activists and some of City Councils’ members. Afterwards, Karaj Attorney General announced prosecuting the environmental infringement.

At the same time, the images and footages of the garden was indicating its critical condition and the cut down of the trees. It is important to note that apple garden was registered in Iran’s National Heritage List.

Mohammdi told ILNA that in the past two or three years, measures have been taken to further revive of the apple garden.

Regarding the firing of the trees in the garden, the top environmental official told that there’s possibility of setting the twigs from the trimmings of the tree on fire, which should be investigated but there hasn't been anything out of the reviving plan in the apple garden.

"The dying trees and those who develop problems and are damaged should be removed and the saplings should be planted and replaced" he added.
